Antique horsehide carriage/sleigh lap robe manufactured by Cownie Tanning Co. of Des Moines, Iowa.

This unique antique features a genuine hair-on horsehide exterior with the horse mane still attached, a colorful geometric-patterned wool backing, and decorative edging. The original Cownie Tanning Co. manufacturer's label is still present.

These heavy lap robes were traditionally used for warmth while traveling in horse-drawn carriages and sleighs. A wonderful piece of early American history for collectors of equestrian antiques, carriage memorabilia, Western decor, and Americana.
